XYZ Project Controls Case Study

Accelerated Delivery: How a $300 million Pharmaceutical project boosted manufacturing capacity

The pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is growing rapidly. As an industry, it attained an estimated value of USD $503.5bn in 2023, with that figure set to reach USD $913.7 by 2030.

For pharmaceutical players looking to harness the rapid pace of innovation in their industry, time is of the essence. The design and build of world-class facilities is essential for staying ahead and maximizing revenue growth.

The need for speed in pharma builds

These facilities must be meticulously tailored to each project’s unique needs, considering the specific products being manufactured, the stringent requirements for FDA and regulatory compliance, and the integration of complex, dense systems, including clean rooms.

The quicker a pharma build can be delivered, the sooner it can start manufacturing and generating revenue. The smallest construction mistakes in these highly complex projects can add days and weeks to the schedule, resulting in slower time to market and greater costs – if they’re not caught in time. Given the sequencing complexity of these projects, precise data reporting is essential to ensure compliance and operational efficiency, making early error detection crucial for maintaining project timelines and controlling expenses.

Proactive error detection is key to keeping pharma builds on the fast-track. By leveraging advanced project controls to monitor progress closely and identify potential clashes early, asset owners can expedite their facility’s launch, ensuring it begins generating revenue as quickly as possible. This approach not only benefits the asset owners but also the general contractors, who can avoid costly rework, stay on schedule, and enhance their reputation for delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget.

Turbocharged construction timelines with real-time project controls

To accelerate the completion of their pharma build and shorten the length of time before it could start manufacturing, the general contractor enlisted XYZ’s support.

Over a ten month period, the contractor benefitted from XYZ’s fully-managed service to ensure accuracy and confidence as the asset handover date grew closer. Objective and precise data, gathered by two XYZ Field Application Engineers (FAEs), offered up invaluable insights that made the project run smoother and more streamlined at every stage.

XYZ’s FAEs conducted hundreds of surveys across areas selected by the main contractor. Using the AtomTM, XYZ’s powerful custom-built engineering tool, the FAEs and onsite teams deployed highly accurate holograms of 4D BIM to visualize and compare real-time construction progress with the program schedule, effectively identifying discrepancies.

Before heading out onsite, XYZ planners and FAEs link the 3D model to the construction schedule. This integration allows for a clear visualization of planned versus actual progress, providing a detailed picture of how the project is advancing compared to the initial plan.

Between November 2022 and September 2023, the FAEs conducted 821 surveys. 77 of these surveys identified issues that, if not corrected immediately, would have delayed the project’s progress and led to costly rework.

By catching these errors early, the contractor avoided the need for additional project hours and resources. Taking proactive measures to prevent delays and costs enabled the project teams to construct faster and more accurately, ensuring quicker delivery of the mission critical asset – and quicker revenue generation.
