Sidestepping clashes: Avoiding delays and rework in busbar installations

In data center construction, every mistake is costly. The days lost to rework are days that the data center is not up and running, generating revenue. For this reason, it is crucial that potential clashes are discovered, brought to light and solved before they take place, or worse, snowball into further delays.

In data center construction, every mistake is costly. The days lost to rework are days that the data center is not up and running, generating revenue. For this reason, it is crucial that potential clashes are discovered, brought to light and solved before they take place, or worse, snowball into further delays.

On this data center project, our partner fully recognized the risk of clashes, so they specifically requested that our Field Application Engineers (FAEs) conduct daily onsite reviews of several particularly complex areas to ensure that future busbar installations do not clash with any existing or planned installations.

XYZ FAEs were able to conduct these inspections with millimeter precision using cutting-edge engineering grade augmented reality (AR)™, which allowed them to visualize holograms of the 3D design model onsite and compare them with the real-world installation. The data captured onsite is immediately fed into the XYZ Platform for all appropriate parties to view and action.

This turned out to be a wise decision from the project team as, during one of these inspections, our FAE identified a design clash between the upcoming busbar and containment installations (pictured below).

Immediate Corrective Action

Having spotted this clash, the issue was immediately flagged to the project team in the XYZ platform. Following this, the General Contractor contacted the design team to address and resolve the problem. The containment model was subsequently redesigned to prevent any clashes before installation began (pictured below).

Resolving this issue before any installations had taken place meant that the project team was able to circumvent any potential rework that would have needed to take place, as well as the delays that would have come with that. Had our FAEs not been present, it is likely that this small positioning error would have gone unnoticed and created a much larger issue that would have had a significant knock-on effect on the whole project, causing delays and lost revenue.

What was the outcome?

  1. By proactively identifying that the planned containment run would interfere with the busbar, we were able to redesign it before installation. As a result, the installation was done correctly the first time.
  2. In this case, the contractor moved the run of containment 100mm (about 3.94 inches) higher to avoid the clash.
  3. With the speed of information delivered by the XYZ platform, corrective action took place at the earliest value stage.

What could have happened?

  1. Had this not been found before the installation, the entire run of containment would have needed to be removed, the height of the brackets adjusted and then all the containment re-installed. This work would have subsequently delayed the installation of the busbar.
  2. This additional work and delay was avoided by using the Atom and the XYZ platform in advance of the installation.

Why is it important to build it right, first time?

Building it right, first time is key to avoiding costly rework and delays. In this case, we identified a clash between the containment run and the busbar early, allowing the contractor to adjust the layout by 100mm before installation. This small change prevented a major issue, saving time and costs. With a proactive approach, the project stayed on track and protected the schedule and revenue.
