04 March 2024
Did you know that this week is Women in Construction Week? This is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges for women in the construction industry, as well as to celebrate their achievements and contributions.
Women in Construction Week takes place in the first full week of March, coinciding with International Women's Day on March 8. It aims to highlight the role of women in the construction industry, and to encourage more girls and women to pursue careers in this field. It also provides an opportunity for networking, education, and recognition of women who are making a difference in the built environment.
Why it matters
Only 10.9% of the construction workforce in the United States comprises women, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Furthermore, a stark gender disparity is evident in leadership roles, with a mere 3.4% of construction managers being women, as highlighted by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
These numbers show that women are still underrepresented and face many barriers in the construction industry, such as gender stereotypes, discrimination, harassment, lack of mentorship, and limited career opportunities.
Despite this, women bring many benefits and advantages to the construction industry, such as diversity, creativity, innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving. Women have the potential to fill the skills gap, improve the quality and safety of projects, and enhance the reputation and profitability of the industry.
That's why it is important to support and empower women in construction, and to encourage more women to pursue careers in this field. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable industry that benefits everyone.
